A Numbers Game

As the Boston Red Sox defend their World Championship this season, the team is banking on the success of key players, including a few recently acquired pitchers, some aging superstars—and a group of technology consultants whose software is making the decisions behind this year’s lineup much easier.

Until recently, when it came time to make player acquisitions and trades, baseball executives had to sift through hundreds of pages of handwritten scouting reports and voicemail messages to piece together player profiles.
